US: Broadview Village Appoints First African American Woman Firefighter

As part of Women’s History Month celebrations, the Village of Broadview Board of Trustees has officially appointed Jasmine Williams as a firefighter in the Broadview Fire Department. This historic decision makes Williams the first African American woman to hold this position in the village’s 110-year history.

Williams also becomes only the third woman ever to serve as a firefighter in Broadview.

Mayor Katrina Thompson and the Board of Trustees recognized this milestone as a significant step toward greater diversity and inclusion in public safety.

“Today, we witness history as the first African American woman is sworn in as a firefighter in Broadview. This moment reflects the growing diversity within fire departments across the nation,” said Mayor Thompson during the ceremony. “As we celebrate Women’s History Month and acknowledge the strides women have made—including their fight for voting rights—it’s important to recognize how those efforts have shaped progress. Jasmine, as a young African American woman stepping into this role, your courage speaks volumes.”

The evening was also one of reflection and appreciation, as the Board and Mayor honored the retirement of Broadview Police Lieutenant David Yurkovich after 27 years of dedicated service.

“We extend our gratitude to Lt. Yurkovich for his unwavering commitment and selfless service to Broadview,” said Thompson. “His contributions have strengthened our police force, and he will always be a valued member of the Broadview family.”

Looking ahead, Broadview remains committed to progress while honoring its legacy.

“With Jasmine Williams joining our fire department and Lt. Yurkovich’s remarkable career being celebrated, Broadview continues to embrace change while upholding its tradition of service,” Thompson stated.
