Abena Osei-Poku: Pioneering the Future of African Finance

Few leaders in African banking exemplify innovation, resilience, and transformative leadership as profoundly as Abena Osei-Poku. With over 25 years of experience, she has strategically steered the corporate landscape, driving pivotal banking transformations across Africa.

From leading Absa Bank Ghana’s rebranding to driving Ecobank Ghana’s regional expansion, Osei-Poku is shaping the future of finance with an unwavering commitment to excellence and inclusion.

Born in Ghana around 1971, Abena Osei-Poku displayed academic brilliance from an early age. She pursued a Bachelor’s degree in Economics and Statistics at the University of Ghana before earning an MBA from the University of Manchester—a step that armed her with a global perspective on banking and finance.

Her career began in private banking at First Atlantic Merchant Bank, followed by a rapid ascent at Standard Chartered Bank, where she handled credit risk, corporate finance, and asset risk management. She later joined Barclays Bank Ghana, where she became the Executive Director of Commercial Banking and later headed Corporate & Investment Banking for Barclays across Africa.

One of Abena’s most defining moments came in 2018, when she took the reins as Managing Director of Barclays Bank Ghana.

Under her leadership, the bank successfully transitioned to Absa Bank Ghana in 2020—a move that required immense strategic planning, stakeholder engagement, and market positioning.

Her efforts did not go unnoticed. She was named Outstanding Woman CEO of the Year in 2019 by the Entrepreneurs Foundation of Ghana, in recognition of her corporate leadership and impact.

In January 2024, she was appointed Managing Director of Ecobank Ghana and Regional Executive for Anglophone West Africa—a critical role overseeing financial inclusion, digital transformation, and economic expansion in multiple countries.

As a woman leading in a traditionally male-dominated industry, Osei-Poku has faced significant challenges. From earning a seat at the table in global finance to transforming African banking structures, she has had to navigate corporate politics, risk management, and public trust.

Her leadership philosophy—”Empower others, create opportunities, and drive sustainable change”—has been instrumental in breaking down these barriers.

With digital banking, financial inclusion, and corporate sustainability at the heart of her agenda, Abena Osei-Poku is pushing for a tech-driven financial ecosystem in Africa.

She continues to serve as the Chairperson of the Ghana Stock Exchange and advises on policy initiatives that reshape Africa’s financial infrastructure.

Her ultimate goal? “To give meaning to people’s financial journeys, ensuring businesses and individuals unlock their full potential.”

In an era where African finance is evolving rapidly, Abena Osei-Poku is not just part of the change—she is leading it.
