Chicago Sky Appoints Rena Wakama as Assistant Coach

Nigerian Women’s National Team Head Coach Rena Wakama has been appointed as an assistant coach for the 2021 WNBA champions, Chicago Sky.

The team announced her appointment yesterday, confirming that she will collaborate with head coach Tyler Marsh and fellow assistants Courtney Paris and Tanisha Wright.

“Rena has demonstrated a winning mentality and attitude,” said Marsh via the club’s website.

“We witnessed her success with the Nigerian national team at the Olympics, where she built on an impressive coaching record and extensive experience in player development. She is a remarkable young leader and coach who will make a significant impact on the Sky’s program.”

Wakama took over as D’Tigress head coach in June 2023, guiding the team to a historic fourth consecutive AfroBasket title in Rwanda. She then led Nigeria to new heights at the 2024 Paris Olympics, securing landmark victories against Australia and Canada before reaching the quarter-finals—the first African team, male or female, to do so—where they ultimately fell to the USA.

Recognized for her achievements, Wakama was named Best Coach by FIBA following the Olympics. Now, she embraces her new role with enthusiasm.

“I am honored and grateful to Jeff and Tyler for this opportunity to join the Chicago Sky family,” Wakama said.

“Tyler is one of the sharpest basketball minds in the industry, and I’m eager to help bring his vision to life. I look forward to contributing to this organization and working alongside an incredible staff to build a competitive and exciting brand of basketball. Let’s get to work!”

Chicago Sky will open their 2025 regular season on Saturday, May 17, against Indiana at Gainbridge Fieldhouse.
