Alice Umulinga Becomes First Woman Elected as Head of Rwanda’s National Olympic Committee

Alice Umulinga has officially been elected President of the Rwanda National Olympic and Sports Committee (RNOSC), becoming the first woman to hold the role permanently.

Her election, held during the RNOSC’s General Assembly in Kigali, was unanimous, with all 50 eligible members backing her candidacy. She ran unopposed, having served as acting president since 2023.

Umulinga took over leadership after former president Theogene Uwayo stepped down due to internal disagreements within the executive committee.

In her acceptance speech, she expressed deep gratitude for the continued trust placed in her, calling it a reflection of unity and ethical leadership within Rwanda’s sports sector.

“This is more than a personal milestone—it represents a collective commitment to a transparent and inclusive sports movement,” Umulinga said, as reported by New Times.

She pledged to continue working closely with the Ministry of Sports, member federations, and international partners during her next four-year term. A new executive committee were also elected, with many incumbents returning to their roles.

Newly Elected RNOSC Executive Committee (2025–2028):

    • Vice Presidents: Christian Gakwaya, Salama Umutoni
    • Secretary General: Joseph Kajangwe
    • Treasurer General: Kevin Ganza
    • Advisors: Jean Butoyi, Arlette Ruyonza

Umulinga reaffirmed the committee’s priorities: athlete-centered governance, transparency, and elevating Rwanda’s presence on the global sports stage.

“Our goal is to build a more sustainable, inclusive, and athlete-focused sports ecosystem,” she stated.

Since taking office in 2023, Umulinga has advanced several development initiatives, including Olympic Solidarity programs that prepare 80 Rwandan athletes for the Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games.

She also spearheaded the Athletes’ Forum, encouraging young athletes to share their concerns and aspirations.
