Crafting Africa’s Cultural Legacy into Contemporary Luxury – Akébéhi Kpolo

In the ever-evolving world of fashion, where trends come and go, Akébéhi Kpolo stands out by weaving the rich tapestry of African heritage into timeless jewelry pieces.

As the founder and creative force behind OHIRI Studio, Kpolo has redefined luxury by infusing ancestral traditions into modern design, creating a brand that resonates on both cultural and aesthetic levels.

Born and raised in Côte d’Ivoire, Kpolo’s early exposure to the diverse cultures within her homeland laid the foundation for her artistic vision.

Her fascination with the Akan people, known for their intricate gold jewelry and symbolic artistry, became a central inspiration. “I fell in love with the Akan people. They had unique necklaces, huge breastplates and sculptures, and I tried to understand the meaning of the jewellery,” she shared in an interview with Bubblegum Club.

Despite pursuing an MBA in Economics in France, Kpolo’s passion for design never waned. Balancing a career in consulting, she continued to create jewelry, eventually leading to the establishment of OHIRI Studio in 2012.

By 2016, she fully committed to her brand, merging her business acumen with her creative pursuits.

OHIRI Studio is more than a jewelry brand; it’s a narrative of African identity and craftsmanship. Each piece is a contemporary interpretation of traditional symbols, meticulously handcrafted to honor the past while embracing the present.

Kpolo’s designs are not mere accessories but storytelling artifacts that connect wearers to a rich cultural lineage.

Her commitment to sustainability and ethical practices is evident. With a background in sustainable development economics, Kpolo ensures that her creations are environmentally conscious and socially responsible.

This dedication led to her selection for the Ethical Fashion Initiative’s Designer Accelerator, a program supporting emerging talents in ethical fashion.

While OHIRI Studio began in Paris, Kpolo’s vision always included a return to her roots.

In recent years, she relocated production to Côte d’Ivoire and Kenya, aiming to revitalize local craftsmanship and provide employment opportunities.

“It was interesting and important for me to bring something to the jewellery industry in Africa, even if it is complicated to make pieces here,” she noted.

Her plans extend beyond jewelry. Kpolo envisions a flagship boutique in Abidjan that doubles as a gallery, showcasing not only her jewelry but also paintings and other artistic expressions inspired by African folklore. This space aims to be a cultural hub, celebrating the continent’s rich artistic heritage.

Akébéhi Kpolo’s journey epitomizes the fusion of tradition and innovation. Through OHIRI Studio, she has carved a niche that challenges conventional notions of luxury, placing African culture at the forefront.

Her work not only adorns but educates, offering wearers a tangible connection to Africa’s storied past.

As the global fashion industry increasingly seeks authenticity and cultural depth, Kpolo’s OHIRI Studio stands as a beacon, illuminating the path forward for African luxury design.
