Meet Adaeze Dexy Onu, The Visionary Empowering Africa Women Through Fashion

In Nigeria’s colorful fashion industry, Adaeze ‘Dexy’ Onu stands out as a beacon of innovation and empowerment.

As the Creative Director of Dexy Creation and Principal of Dexy Creation Academy, Onu has seamlessly woven her passion for art into a mission that uplifts and transforms the lives of women across Nigeria.

Onu’s journey into the world of fashion was born out of personal adversity.

Growing up with low self-esteem due to challenging socio-economic conditions, she found solace and expression in art.

Sketching designs and creating art from paper and fabric waste became her therapeutic outlet, gradually building her confidence and igniting a passion that would later define her career.

This personal transformation laid the foundation for Dexy Creation, a brand dedicated to crafting clothing that empowers women to feel confident and embrace their identities.

Established with a modest seed capital of ₦100,000, Dexy Creation has evolved into a sustainable fashion brand that champions circular economy principles.

By utilizing up-cycled textile waste, the brand not only creates unique ready-to-wear pieces but also addresses environmental concerns within the fashion industry.

The brand’s commitment to sustainability and empowerment was showcased in its Orente SS23 collection at Fashion’s Finest Africa, highlighting its innovative approach to fashion design.

Beyond fashion design, Onu’s vision extends to education and mentorship through the Dexy Creation Academy.

The academy offers vocational training in fashion and art, aiming to equip women with the skills needed for financial independence and self-confidence.

To date, the academy has empowered over 500 women, with a goal to reach 10,000 in the next few years.

The curriculum emphasizes not only technical skills but also business acumen, including financial literacy and entrepreneurship.

Onu’s dedication to women’s empowerment has garnered recognition both locally and internationally. She has been honored with awards for her contributions to youth and women’s empowerment and has participated in programs such as the Cherie Blair Foundation’s Road to Finance, which enhanced her financial literacy and business skills.

These accolades underscore her impact as a social innovator and mentor.

Like most entrepreneurs, Onu acknowledges that navigating the entrepreneurial landscape in Nigeria presents unique challenges, particularly for women who are faced with hurdles such as balancing business and family life, accessing finance, and overcoming societal expectations.

She advocates for policies that support female entrepreneurs, including lower interest rates on loans and increased representation of women in policymaking positions.

Looking ahead, Onu envisions a future where technology and fashion converge.

She aims to integrate 3D design and robotics into Dexy Creation’s processes, expanding the brand’s offerings beyond clothing to include accessories like perfumes, shoes, and bags.

Furthermore, she aspires for Dexy Creation Academy to gain global recognition, fostering international collaborations and extending its reach to empower more women worldwide.

Adaeze Dexy Onu’s journey exemplifies the transformative power of combining creativity with purpose.

Through Dexy Creation and its academy, she continues to inspire and equip women to embrace their identities, achieve financial independence, and contribute meaningfully to society.
