Meet Magalie Lebreton-Traoré, The Scientist Championing STEM, Empowering Women, and Shaping Africa’s Future

Dr. Magalie Lebreton-Traoré is a leading force in Africa’s science and technology landscape—an accomplished molecular cell biologist turned development strategist, whose work is redefining STEM education, gender equity, and climate-conscious innovation across the continent.

Her academic foundation is rooted in a PhD in Molecular Cell Biology, completed in 2008 under the mentorship of renowned biologist Temo Kurzchalia at the Max Planck Institute of Molecular Cell Biology and Genetics.

Her research bridged the microscopic world of cells with real-world solutions, a vision she has continued to champion well beyond the lab.

Transitioning from research into global development, Dr. Lebreton-Traoré has become a prominent voice within UNESCO, serving as a senior consultant within the Priority Africa and External Relations Sector.

In this capacity, she supports the strategic design and evaluation of educational and scientific programs aimed at scaling Africa’s technological and research capacities.

From coordinating policy initiatives to facilitating expert partnerships, her work contributes to the broader mission of creating equitable, knowledge-based societies in Africa.

A major milestone in her impact journey is her leadership in the “African Women in Tech and AI” initiative—a groundbreaking partnership between UNESCO and regional stakeholders that empowers African women through digital skills training, AI education, and entrepreneurship.

This program tackles the tech gender gap head-on, offering a platform for women to thrive in emerging industries and lead Africa’s digital transformation.

Her influence also extends into climate action. As part of UNESCO’s Contextual Analysis and Foresight Unit, she has played a key role in evaluating and refining the UNESCO Strategy for Action on Climate Change. Her interdisciplinary approach ensures that scientific advancement, educational reform, and environmental sustainability go hand in hand—integral pillars in building Africa’s resilient future.

Through every endeavor, Dr. Lebreton-Traoré exemplifies the power of science as a tool for societal progress.

Her career weaves together rigorous academic training, strategic policy influence, and a deep commitment to inclusivity—especially in uplifting women and youth.

As Africa navigates the opportunities and challenges of the 21st century, leaders like Dr. Lebreton-Traoré are lighting the path toward a smarter, more sustainable future.
