Ethiopia Resumes $445M Skyscraper Project to Build Sub-Saharan Africa’s Tallest Skyscraper

Ethiopia has revived its $445 million plan to construct a 62-storey skyscraper in Addis Ababa, aiming to claim the title of the tallest building in sub-Saharan Africa.

Known as the EEP Tower, the building, according to Business Insider Africa, will serve as the future headquarters of Ethiopian Electric Power (EEP) and will stand at 1,074 feet, surpassing Johannesburg’s Leonardo Tower (768 feet).

Located in the Kirkos district, the tower will feature a rooftop restaurant, over 2.1 million square feet of floor space, 55 office floors with sky gardens, and a commercial podium. The structure will be built on a 20,792-square-meter site and include three basement levels.

The project, originally proposed in 2023, had stalled due to financial constraints but has now reopened bidding to qualified local and international contractors.

The government has mandated that bidders have at least a decade of experience and three prior projects worth $370 million or more. Construction will follow an EPC (Engineering, Procurement, and Construction) model and is expected to span four years.

Beirut-based Dar Al-Handasah will oversee the design and management, with an emphasis on sustainable construction.

Beyond its architectural symbolism, the project is expected to boost job creation and catalyze broader urban development.
