Tourism Overtakes Gold as Tanzania’s Leading Source of FGX

In a historic shift, tourism has officially become Tanzania’s top foreign exchange earner, surpassing gold and reflecting the nation’s impressive post-pandemic economic recovery.

According to the Bank of Tanzania’s June 2025 Monthly Economic Review, revenue from the tourism sector soared to $3.92 billion in the 12 months ending May 2025—an increase from $3.63 billion the previous year.

This figure now accounts for 55.1% of all service-related earnings, pushing tourism ahead of gold, which brought in $3.83 billion during the same period.

The rise in tourism revenue is largely attributed to a surge in international arrivals. Visitor numbers jumped to 2,170,360, up from 1,961,870 the year before.

President Samia Suluhu Hassan’s administration has played a significant role in driving the sector’s expansion through strategic policy reforms.

One of the key measures included partial exemptions from foreign exchange controls, granted on July 8, 2025, by the central bank.

These exemptions now permit tour operators to use foreign currency to pay for services on behalf of non-resident tourists and to purchase specialised vehicles from local suppliers—moves applauded by stakeholders for easing operational bottlenecks while safeguarding currency stability.

The policy shift highlights a broader government commitment to positioning tourism as a cornerstone of Tanzania’s long-term economic development.

Tanzania continues to attract global attention with its renowned destinations such as Mount Kilimanjaro, Serengeti National Park, and Zanzibar’s beaches.

This growing global appeal earned the country several top recognitions at the 2024 World Travel Awards, including Africa’s Leading Destination and World’s Leading Safari Destination.

As the tourism industry gains momentum, Tanzania is establishing itself as a premier travel destination and reinforcing its economy with a sustainable, service-driven growth model.
