Lagos to Face Power Outages as TCN Begins 25-Day Maintenance Work

Electricity consumers in Lagos State will experience intermittent power outages over the next few weeks as the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) begins critical maintenance on the Omotosho–Ikeja West 330kV transmission line.

According to TCN, the 25-day exercise—scheduled from Monday, July 28 to Thursday, August 21, 2025—will involve the installation of Optical Ground Wire (OPGW) fibre cables as part of efforts to fully operationalize the Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system.

The work will be carried out daily between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m., with power expected to be restored through the line after each day’s activity.

The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) and the National Independent System Operator (NISO) have approved the infrastructure upgrade.

TCN spokesperson Ndidi Mbah said the upgrade will enhance real-time grid monitoring and management, contributing to a more stable power supply in the long run.

Meanwhile, the two main electricity distribution companies in Lagos—Ikeja Electric and Eko Electricity Distribution Company (EKEDC)—have notified customers of the potential impact.

In separate public notices, both DISCOs warned that customers may face intermittent outages and load shedding throughout the duration of the project.

Affected areas span across the entire operational coverage of both companies, although efforts are being made to minimize disruptions.

The project comes at a time when Nigeria’s power sector continues to grapple with infrastructure challenges and subsidy concerns, with government officials warning that ballooning debts may soon affect electricity pricing models.
