Ghana Prepares First Oil Shipment to Burkina Faso as Energy Reforms Gain Momentum

Ghana’s Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Jinapor, has praised the Bulk Oil Storage and Transportation Company Limited (BOST) for its pivotal role in strengthening the country’s energy infrastructure and contributing significantly to ongoing sector reforms.

Speaking during the Government Accountability Series, Jinapor commended BOST’s operational efficiency, particularly under the leadership of Managing Director Afetsi Awoonor and his deputy, noting the company’s progress in improving strategic petroleum reserves.

He revealed that Ghana is set to dispatch its first batch of petroleum products to Burkina Faso, a move that forms part of a broader plan to extend an oil pipeline from Ghana into the landlocked nation. 

This project, he explained, would position Ghana as a central hub for fuel logistics in the region, Business Insider Africa reports.

“BOST is performing remarkably, and we’re actively working on a pipeline project that will enable Burkina Faso to lift petroleum products directly from Ghana,” Jinapor said. “This represents a major step forward for regional energy cooperation.”

Founded in 1993, BOST is Ghana’s primary agency for petroleum storage and distribution and plays a key role in national and regional energy strategies.

Jinapor also outlined sector-wide gains made in the past seven months, expressing optimism about the future of Ghana’s energy landscape. He identified three critical areas of improvement:

1. Stable Energy Supply: Efforts to guarantee a consistent and reliable energy supply across the country have shown tangible results.
   
2. Improved Petroleum Reserves: Government initiatives have led to a notable increase in petroleum reserves.
   
3. Sector Reforms: The Ministry has launched a broad cleanup campaign to combat corruption and boost transparency and accountability in the energy sector.

“These achievements are only the beginning,” Jinapor emphasized. “We must sustain this momentum and continue working together to build a resilient and transparent energy system.”

He called on all stakeholders to maintain collaboration toward ensuring long-term sustainability and growth in Ghana’s energy sector.
