    Dr. Cynthia Khumalo Named First Female DG of South Africa’s Sport, Arts & Culture Department

    The Department of Sport, Arts and Culture (DSAC) has announced the historic appointment of Dr. Cynthia Ntombifuthi Khumalo as its first female Director-General. Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture.

    Gayton McKenzie, confirmed the appointment on Friday, calling it a landmark moment for the department, the country, and women aspiring to leadership in public service.

    Affectionately known as “Stella,” Dr. Khumalo brings over three decades of professional experience in education, governance, tourism, and cultural affairs. 

    Born and raised in KwaZulu-Natal, she has built a distinguished career marked by resilience, excellence, and a reputation for steady leadership.

    Her academic achievements include a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Zululand, a Bachelor of Education, a Higher Education Diploma, and a Diploma in Human Resource Management. 

    She also holds a Master of Business Administration and a Doctorate in Business Administration from the University of KwaZulu-Natal, where her research focused on corporate governance in state-owned entities. 

    In addition, she is a certified Executive and Management Coach.

    Dr. Khumalo’s professional journey began as an educator before advancing to Deputy Principal and later to senior roles across multiple sectors. 

    She previously served as CEO of the KZN Liquor Authority and uShaka Marine World, and most recently as Deputy Director-General at DSAC, where she has acted as Director-General since March 2023.

    Throughout her career, she has successfully overseen multi-billion-rand budgets, championed policy reforms, and maintained a record of clean governance. 

    Under her leadership, institutions earned accolades such as the SAIGA Annual Public Sector Reporting Award and TripAdvisor’s Hall of Fame recognition. 

    She has also been honored with the Regional Businesswomen Achievement Award (2016) and the SHERO Award for Public Service (2018).

    Minister McKenzie described her as a trailblazer whose leadership will drive transformation across sport, arts, and culture in South Africa.

    “Dr. Khumalo embodies excellence, calm under pressure, and an unwavering work ethic. Her appointment isn’t just about breaking the glass ceiling—it’s about redefining leadership. She brings integrity, fresh ideas, and inclusive leadership at a time when our sector needs it most,” he said.

    As the first woman to hold the position, Dr. Khumalo’s appointment is seen as both a symbolic and practical step toward advancing gender equity in government leadership. 

    Her vision, according to DSAC, is anchored in nation-building, transformation, and creating opportunities for young people and the creative industries.

    The Ministry has called on South Africans to support her leadership as she takes on the role of Director-General, steering the department into what is expected to be a new era of accountability and progress.
