Kenya’s President William Ruto has stepped in to assist Africans — particularly Kenyans — caught in the crossfire of the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war, following reports that some were deceived into joining the conflict under false pretenses.
During a phone conversation with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Ruto expressed deep concern over the plight of Kenyans allegedly tricked into military recruitment and called for their immediate release.
He appealed to the Ukrainian government to investigate the situation and ensure that no Kenyan remains unlawfully detained.

“I have requested President Zelensky to facilitate the release of any Kenyan in Ukrainian custody. I am grateful to His Excellency for acceding to my appeal,” Ruto stated on X (formerly Twitter).
In response, President Zelenskyy thanked Kenya for its consistent support during what he described as Russia’s “criminal war” and assured Ruto that Ukraine would take steps to resolve the issue.
He confirmed that both nations will work together to block illegal recruitment channels and protect vulnerable Africans from exploitation.
“We are aware of the fraudulent methods being used to recruit foreign citizens and will cooperate more closely to end them,” Zelenskyy said.
He also discussed Ukraine’s plan to present a UN resolution condemning Russia’s abduction and deportation of Ukrainian children, thanking Kenya for its anticipated support.
The diplomatic engagement highlights Kenya’s growing voice in global humanitarian and security affairs, as Ruto continues to advocate for African citizens affected by international crises and exploitation abroad.
