Dr. Precious Moloi-Motsepe is the Founder and Executive Chair of African Fashion International (AFI) and has dedicated her career to building platforms that not only showcase African designers but also position them as global players in the fashion economy.
She believes that fashion is more than an aesthetic pursuit—it is an engine for economic growth, cultural expression, and global influence.
Born in Soweto, South Africa, Dr. Moloi-Motsepe’s journey began in medicine, where she worked as a physician with a focus on women’s and children’s health.
Her experiences in healthcare sharpened her awareness of the structural inequalities that affected women across different sectors.
Over time, she realized that empowering women went beyond the clinic—it required creating economic opportunities, visibility, and platforms where their creativity could thrive. Fashion became her chosen arena.
In 2007, she founded African Fashion International (AFI) with a clear mission: to create a sustainable ecosystem for African fashion.
AFI quickly became one of the most influential fashion platforms on the continent, producing world-class fashion weeks in Johannesburg and Cape Town and serving as a launchpad for some of Africa’s most celebrated designers.
Through AFI, she has connected African talent with global buyers, media, and investors, positioning the continent’s fashion industry as a serious contributor to the global creative economy.
Dr. Moloi-Motsepe has also emphasized the importance of infrastructure and support for designers beyond the runway.
AFI provides mentorship, retail opportunities, and access to markets—bridging the gap between creativity and commerce.
Many of the designers who showcased on AFI platforms have gone on to achieve international acclaim, proof of the organization’s role as a talent incubator.
Her vision has always extended beyond fashion shows. She sees fashion as a catalyst for job creation, cultural diplomacy, and women’s empowerment. Under her leadership, AFI has highlighted African fashion not as a trend but as a global force rooted in history, innovation, and identity.
Dr. Moloi-Motsepe’s impact has been recognized internationally.
She has spoken at global forums on entrepreneurship, women’s leadership, and the creative economy, while receiving accolades for her contributions to both fashion and philanthropy.
Together with her husband, business magnate Dr. Patrice Motsepe, she co-founded the Motsepe Foundation, which supports initiatives in education, health, and entrepreneurship across Africa.
Her journey from medicine to fashion reflects a deeper truth: that industries seemingly worlds apart can intersect when driven by a passion for people and progress.
For Dr. Moloi-Motsepe, fashion is not vanity—it is enterprise, empowerment, and cultural diplomacy.
Through African Fashion International, she has created a stage where African designers do not just participate but lead—reshaping how the world sees Africa and how Africa sees itself.
