Easy Fixes for Everyday Household Problems (Without Calling a Pro)

Not every little household problem needs a pricey repair or a professional visit.

With a few clever tricks, you can solve common issues on your own—saving both time and money.

    1. Squeaky Door Hinges

Rub a little petroleum jelly, olive oil, or even bar soap on the hinge.

Open and close the door a few times, and the squeak is gone.

    2. Clogged Drain

Pour half a cup of baking soda followed by half a cup of vinegar down the drain. Let it fizz for 10 minutes, then flush with hot water.

    3. Wobbly Chair or Table

Slip a folded piece of cardboard or felt pad under the shorter leg. For a sturdier fix, use wood glue on loose joints.

    4. Stuck Zipper

Rub a little candle wax, pencil graphite, or soap along the teeth. This lubricates the zipper so it slides smoothly again.

    5. Foggy Bathroom Mirror

Before your shower, rub a small amount of shaving cream on the mirror and wipe it off. It creates a barrier that prevents fog.

    6. Stripped Screw Hole

Insert a wooden toothpick (or two) coated with glue into the hole, then screw back in. The toothpick fills the gap and holds the screw firmly.

    7. Scuffed Wooden Furniture

Rub a walnut over scratches in wooden furniture. The natural oils help mask the marks.

Most household annoyances have quick, low-cost fixes right at your fingertips.

With a little creativity and some everyday items, you can handle small problems yourself—and save calling the handyman for bigger jobs.
