Nigerian disc jockey and philanthropist DJ Cuppy, born Florence Ifeoluwa Otedola, has opened up about her unconventional career journey while delivering the commencement address to the Class of 2026 at King’s College London, where she studied Business Management over a decade ago.
Addressing the graduating students, Cuppy reflected on how her life after university unfolded differently from what she had originally envisioned.

Rather than pursuing a predictable corporate path, she built an international career as a DJ, performing on global stages.
She noted that while university equips students with knowledge, it also instills a deeper sense of purpose that continues to shape their lives long after graduation.
Using the acronym “KCL” as a framework for her message, Cuppy outlined what she described as her personal roadmap to success.
The first letter, “K,” she said, stands for “kickstart.” She encouraged graduates to take action even when they feel uncertain, stressing that clarity often comes after movement.
Recalling her early days performing in small pubs near campus, she said those humble beginnings eventually opened doors she never imagined.
The second letter, “C,” represents “connect.” Cuppy urged graduates to build meaningful relationships with people, ideas and purpose.
Highlighting the work of the Cuppy Foundation, which she founded eight years ago to support educational initiatives in Africa, she emphasized that networks go beyond professional platforms and form part of one’s lasting legacy.
Finally, she explained that “L” stands for “lift.” She encouraged the class to support others as they advance in their careers, reminding them to uplift colleagues, communities and those following behind them.
Cuppy also acknowledged the resilience of the graduating class, noting that many overcame personal and academic challenges to reach the milestone.
Concluding her speech, she congratulated the graduates and urged them to “kickstart, connect and lift” as they step into the next chapter of their lives.
