Annie Oti, an Igbo lawyer born in Imo State and educated at Obafemi Awolowo University in Osun State, began her legal studies with clear purpose: to carve a space for fashion law in Nigeria.
After being called to the Nigerian Bar, she founded Africa Fashion Law Services in Lagos in 2017 to bridge a critical gap between creatives and legal infrastructure in fashion and creative industries.
As founder, Annie offers tailored legal solutions to designers, brands, and SMEs across apparel, footwear, jewellery, and cosmetics. Her services span business structuring, trademark registration, IP protection, licensing agreements, franchising, and merchandising arrangements—establishing professionalism in an industry long underserved by formal legal processes.
Annie is a frequent speaker and facilitator at key forums, including The Africa Creative Market’s Fashion EVO Masterclass (2024), Africa Global Creative Legal Summit, Fashion Tech New York Week (2021), and Fashions Finest Africa’s Business of Fashion Conference (2022). She also hosts The Fashion Law Podcast, offering insights on fashion-law intersections for African creatives and entrepreneurs.
In 2019, Annie was honored by the Fashion Law Institute (Turkey) as the Most Influential Fashion Lawyer in Africa, a testament to her pioneering work in formalizing legal standards within the region’s creative sector.
Annie initiated the Global Fashion Law Mentorship Program, offering participants international-learning opportunities and internships across firms in Nigeria, the U.S., and India. She also leads The Creative Legal Clinic, a UN-affiliated initiative providing accessible legal advisory to fashion entrepreneurs .
With passion and research-driven determination, she addresses systemic issues like intellectual property ignorance, informal business structures, and lack of legal guidance among creatives in Nigeria. Through Africa Fashion Law, she promotes measurable economic growth and professionalization within the fashion sector—emphasizing that structured legal support is key to unlocking investment and global opportunities for African designers.
Annie Oti stands at the intersection of law, culture, and creativity. By founding Africa Fashion Law, she is not only providing essential legal frameworks to fashion entrepreneurs but also advancing economic inclusion and professional credibility across Africa’s creative sectors. Her leadership ensures that African fashion creatives are armed with the knowledge and protection necessary to compete globally.
