Cooking Gas Prices Surge by 44.5% in One Year – NBS

The average retail price for refilling a 12.5 kg cylinder of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), commonly used as cooking gas in Nigeria, surged by 44.51% year-on-year in July 2025, according to the latest LPG Price Watch Report released by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS).

Data from the report shows that the cost of a 12.5 kg cylinder rose from ₦14,261.57 in July 2024 to ₦20,609.48 in July 2025, reflecting a significant increase in household energy expenses.

While prices are sharply higher compared to the previous year, the report indicates a slight month-on-month decrease of 1.91%, from ₦21,010.56 in June 2025 to ₦20,609.48 in July 2025.

The NBS also noted that the price of a 5 kg cylinder increased 37.98% year-on-year, rising from ₦5,974.55 in July 2024 to ₦8,243.79 in July 2025, though it recorded a small 0.96% decline from the previous month.

Regional analysis highlighted notable price variations.

Adamawa recorded the highest average price for a 5 kg cylinder at ₦9,011.36, followed by Rivers (₦9,005.00) and Taraba (₦8,945.43), while Yobe (₦7,612.00), Niger (₦7,662.00), and Nasarawa (₦8,000.25) had the lowest prices.

For the 12.5 kg cylinder, Adamawa again topped the chart at ₦22,528.39, with Rivers and Taraba following closely. Yobe recorded the lowest average at ₦19,030.00.

Zone-wise, the South-South region had the highest retail prices for both cylinder sizes, while the South-West had the lowest.

The report, based on responses from over 10,000 participants across Nigeria’s 774 local government areas, comes after the Federal Government in October 2024 banned the export of locally produced cooking gas to prioritise domestic supply, a policy confirmed by the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Gas), Ekperikpe Ekpo.

The latest NBS findings suggest that while month-on-month relief is modest, the overall trend reflects persistent upward pressure on cooking gas prices, a development affecting households nationwide.
