Meet Africa’s “Starchitect” Building Legacy Through Vision, Design, and Leadership – Olajumoke Adenowo

Olajumoke Olufunmilola Adenowo’s story began in Ibadan on October 16, 1968, to parents deeply rooted in academia.

A precocious student, she entered Obafemi Awolowo University at age 14 and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Architecture with Honours by 19, earning the prestigious Best Student Design award.

She followed immediately with a Master of Science in Architecture—again with distinction—by 1991, laying the intellectual bedrock of her illustrious career.

Her early professional years included roles at Towry Coker Associates and Femi Majekodunmi Associates, where she worked on high-profile projects, including the Federal Ministry of Finance building in Abuja at just 23.

That landmark building foreshadowed her ambition and ability to deliver infrastructural excellence in Nigeria’s public and institutional landscape.

In 1994, she launched AD Consulting, her boutique architectural and interior design firm, at age 25.

For more than three decades now, AD Consulting has shaped over 110 iconic developments—from government offices to mixed-use complexes, healthcare facilities, and master plans—for clients like Coca-Cola, L’Oréal, GTBank, Access Bank, and even the Nigerian Stock Exchange.

The firm is widely recognised as Nigeria’s most internationally awarded architectural practice, emblematic of Adenowo’s “NeoHeritage” design philosophy that honours cultural heritage within contemporary frameworks.

Parallel to her architectural enterprise, Adenowo has expanded into multiple business ventures.

She founded Advantage Energy, an oil and gas services company, and Advantage Property, a property management firm, demonstrating entrepreneurial versatility beyond built environments.

Adenowo’s influence extends well past boardrooms. In 1999, she launched Awesome Treasures Foundation (ATF), a faith-based NGO dedicated to cultivating transformational leaders.

Through programs like Camp Dawn, Synergy women’s mentorship networks, and vocational training initiatives, ATF has empowered thousands of women and youth across Nigeria with leadership, business, and design education—and aims to help build 1,000 leaders by 2030.

As a published author and media figure, she authored books including Lifespring: The Mother’s Prayer Manual, The Mysterious Seed: Secrets of Financial Increase, and Designed for Marriage. She also hosts the syndicated radio programme Voice of Change, inspiring leadership among over 15 million listeners per episode.

Adenowo’s leadership has earned international recognition.

In 2020, she was named Forbes Woman Africa Entrepreneur of the Year and was included in Forbes Africa’s 50 Over 50 list in 2024.

CNN dubbed her “Africa’s Starchitect”, while The Guardian (Nigeria) described her as “the face of architecture in Nigeria”.

She has received numerous awards, including those from IDEA, the International Property Awards, and the African Property Awards, and was honoured as an Ambassador of Excellence by her alma mater.

Her expertise and influence also extend to global boards and institutions.

In February 2024, she was appointed to Flutterwave’s global Board of Directors, leveraging her leadership and global networks to guide the fintech company through pan-African growth. She has also served in governance roles with the Cartier Women’s Initiative Awards jury, Fountain Holdings, and the International Federation of Interior Architects and Designers.

Academically, Adenowo was invited as a visiting professor at the Technical University of Munich, where she continues to influence architectural theory and discourse. Her monograph NeoHeritage: Defining Contemporary African Architecture was the first such publication by an African architect via the prestigious Rizzoli press, further cementing her role as a thought leader beyond practice.

Olajumoke Adenowo embodies the polymathic entrepreneur: designing landmark architecture, leading in business, mentoring emerging leaders, and shaping narratives through writing and media.

Her journey underscores how cultural fidelity, intellectual discipline, and design excellence can intersect to produce institutions that uplift communities.

In a continent where women-led entrepreneurship is increasingly celebrated, she stands as a blueprint for impact-driven leadership—proof that architecture can transform both spaces and futures.
