Meet Funke Opeke, The Visionary Entrepreneur behind MainOne

In an era where connectivity defines progress, one woman has been at the forefront of Africa’s digital transformation—Funke Opeke, the visionary entrepreneur behind MainOne.

With an audacious goal of bridging Nigeria’s broadband gap, Opeke has navigated challenges, disrupted an industry, and set a blueprint for Africa’s digital future.

Opeke’s journey to the pinnacle of African tech leadership is nothing short of extraordinary. Armed with an electrical engineering degree from Obafemi Awolowo University and a Master’s from Columbia University, she honed her expertise in the United States, rising through the ranks in telecommunications.

After years of success abroad, Opeke returned to Nigeria, dismayed by the country’s digital infrastructure gaps. Rather than lament the status quo, she decided to change it.

Recognizing that Africa’s economic potential was constrained by poor connectivity, Opeke founded MainOne in 2008.

Her mission was ambitious—laying a 7,000-kilometer undersea cable from Portugal to West Africa to provide high-speed internet access.

It was a daunting task: securing financing, battling regulatory red tape, and challenging established players in an industry resistant to disruption. Yet, Opeke’s unwavering resolve paid off. By 2010, MainOne had launched its cable system, delivering faster and more affordable internet to businesses across the region.

The journey to success was fraught with challenges. Raising $240 million in funding for a tech infrastructure project in Africa was no easy feat. Convincing investors of the continent’s digital potential required Opeke’s deep industry knowledge, credibility, and relentless persistence.

Additionally, regulatory hurdles and infrastructural limitations posed significant barriers. However, her ability to build strategic alliances and a world-class team helped her navigate these obstacles, solidifying MainOne as a trailblazer in African broadband services.

Under Opeke’s leadership, MainOne has revolutionized connectivity in Nigeria and beyond.

The company has expanded its data center operations, enhancing cloud services and enterprise solutions. It was no surprise that in 2022, MainOne was acquired by Equinix, a global digital infrastructure giant, marking one of the most significant deals in Africa’s tech space.

Beyond business, Opeke is a staunch advocate for digital inclusion. She continues to champion initiatives that empower women in STEM and drive policies that enhance broadband penetration across the continent.

Despite her success, Opeke remains focused on the bigger picture—an Africa that is not just connected but digitally empowered.

With her deep expertise, relentless vision, and commitment to change, Funke Opeke is not just a business leader; she is a digital pioneer shaping the continent’s future.

Her journey serves as a beacon for aspiring entrepreneurs, proving that with vision, resilience, and unwavering determination, one person can redefine an industry and transform millions of lives.
