Meet Itoro Essien: The Visionary Cultivating a New Generation of Readers Through Bookers Root

In a world where digital distractions often eclipse the timeless joy of reading, Itoro Essien is on a mission to reignite a love for books among children.

As the Founder of Bookers Root, a children’s reading and activity club, she is fostering a culture of literary excellence among young minds aged 4 to 9.

Over the past year, the club has read over 40 books, in more than 30 interactive sessions, and welcomed more than 400 children at these meetings, curating enriching experiences—from lively picnics to excursions that engaged both children and parents.

For Essien, the journey into literacy advocacy is a seamless extension of her diverse professional and personal experiences.

With over seven years in banking, she mastered the art of organization, relationship-building, and leadership. But it was during her time as a dedicated stay-at-home mom that she truly honed the ability to nurture, educate, and inspire.

Now, through Bookers Root, she is channeling these skills into shaping the next generation of readers and critical thinkers.

“It’s about more than just reading books,” Essien explains. “We’re building curiosity, imagination, and a lifelong habit of learning. Children should see books as their companions, not just assignments.”

Her dedication extends beyond the walls of her club. As a volunteer mentor for children in government schools, she is actively bridging the literacy gap, ensuring that access to books and quality learning experiences is not a privilege but a right.

Essien’s academic background reflects her multifaceted expertise—she holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Genetics and Biotechnology and a Master of Science in Information Technology. Yet, her true passion lies in education and storytelling, proving that a career trajectory doesn’t have to be linear to be impactful.

Balancing her entrepreneurial vision with family life, Essien credits her unwavering support system—her husband and two children—as a crucial part of her journey. “They remind me why this work matters,” she says. “Reading is not just an academic tool; it’s an avenue for creativity, emotional intelligence, and global awareness.”

Through Bookers Root, Essien is not only nurturing young readers but also reshaping the narrative around literacy in Africa. As she expands her reach, her vision remains clear: to cultivate a generation of children who see the world through the limitless possibilities that books offer.

For parents, educators, and policymakers, her work presents a compelling case for reinvesting in literacy.

And for the children who eagerly gather at each Bookers Root meeting, it is a doorway to a world of adventure, knowledge, and boundless imagination.
