Meet Joyce Bawa Mogtari, a Defining Force in Leadership, Resilience, and Dedication

Joyce Bawa Mogtari is one of the few names that have had a profound impact on the vibrant political and legal landscape of Ghana. A trailblazer, a leader, and a voice of resilience, Joyce’s journey is one of persistence, hard work, and breaking barriers.

She’s a woman whose influence stretches far beyond her impressive academic credentials, into the very heart of governance, law, and public service.

Following the inauguration of the first female Ghanaian president, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, on the 7th of January, 2025, Joyce was appointed as a special aide to the president of Ghana, marking her power and influence in the country.

Joyce’s story began with an early foundation in law. With a Bachelor of Laws Degree (LLB) in hand, she was called to the Bar in 2000, marking the beginning of what would be a distinguished legal career. But Joyce didn’t stop there.

Her thirst for knowledge took her beyond Ghana’s borders to Malta, where she pursued a Master of Laws Degree (LLM) in International Maritime Transport Law from the International Maritime Organization’s International Maritime Law Institute (IMO-IMLI).

It was here that Joyce truly shone, receiving the IMO Legal Committee Chairman’s prize for Best Student, a recognition of her outstanding brilliance and dedication.

Her career, spanning both the public and private sectors, is a testament to her versatility and unwavering commitment. Joyce began her professional journey at SEY & Co., where she quickly gained a reputation for her sharp legal mind.

She later consulted for KPMG and the Venture Capital Trust Fund, where her expertise in corporate acquisitions, mergers, and financial transactions proved invaluable.

Her legal acumen made her a sought-after expert, and soon she was representing Ghana at numerous international diplomatic conferences focused on maritime transport law. Joyce wasn’t just making her mark in Ghana; she was leaving an imprint on the global stage.

Her time as Ghana’s Deputy Minister for Transport under former President John Dramani Mahama was another defining chapter of her career.

Joyce brought her wealth of experience to the ministry, playing a pivotal role in shaping transport policies that would drive Ghana’s development.

But it wasn’t just her technical expertise that stood out; it was her ability to navigate the often-complicated world of politics with grace, strategic insight, and a deep commitment to her country’s progress.

However, it is her unwavering support for President Mahama during difficult times that truly speaks to her character. Joyce was more than just a political aide; she was a steadfast ally, a trusted adviser, and a fierce advocate for the values of justice, transparency, and good governance.

When the stakes were high, she stood shoulder to shoulder with President Mahama, offering guidance and counsel that helped steer the country through turbulent waters.

Today, Joyce Bawa Mogtari’s appointment as Presidential Adviser and Special Aide to the President of Ghana is a culmination of her years of hard work, dedication, and unwavering commitment to public service.

Her new role positions her at the heart of the country’s leadership, where her extensive experience and expertise will undoubtedly play a crucial role in strengthening governance and advancing Ghana’s progress.

Her legacy is one of dedication to service, an unwavering belief in the power of women, and an inspiring example of how leadership, grounded in integrity and passion, can truly change the world. Joyce Bawa Mogtari is a symbol of hope and possibility for the next generation of women in Africa. Indeed, she’s worth celebrating on Crest Africa.
