Meet Tokunboh George-Taylor, Visionary Putting Nigeria on the Global Communications Map

When it comes to elite communications strategy in Africa, few names command the respect and influence like that of Tokunboh George-Taylor.

Over more than three decades, she has built a career that transcends mere agency leadership — she has helped define what professional public relations, corporate storytelling and brand stewardship look like in Nigeria and beyond.

Born and educated in the U.S., where she holds a Bachelor of Arts in Economics from University of Wisconsin and later returned to deploy her skills in Africa, George-Taylor carries a dual sensibility: global professionalism anchored in local relevance.

Her early career included a significant stint at Oando PLC — an integrated energy conglomerate in Nigeria — where she spent over fourteen years on its Group Leadership Council, heading Corporate Services and Corporate Communications divisions.

This foundation laid the groundwork for what followed: her tenure as the first Managing Director of Hill+Knowlton Strategies Nigeria (H+K) where she guided the global consultancy’s operations in Nigeria, steering major reputation, advocacy and corporate affairs work across sectors.

Her decision to branch out on her own was a strategic turning point. In 2024 she completed the acquisition of H+K Nigeria’s business and assets, repositioning them under her newly founded enterprise, SKOT Communications.

Under her leadership, SKOT has not just aimed to compete but to expand Nigeria’s place on the global communications map — in early 2025 it entered into partnership with PROI Worldwide, giving it access to a network of 90 agencies across 65 countries. What makes George-Taylor’s journey especially compelling is how she has consistently emphasised the intersection of story and strategy — that effective communications is not simply about messaging but about relationships, credibility and purpose.

She often says that “every individual and corporation has a unique story to tell,” and that the role of a good agency is to “amplify voices” in ways that foster both loyalty and measurable business impact.

Her expertise is broad but anchored in authenticity: internal communications and stakeholder engagement, digital & influencer media, crisis and issues management, public affairs and advocacy. She has worked across sectors such as finance, energy, consumer services, technology, healthcare and entertainment.

Her leadership style also reflects the importance of investment in people — she leverages training and executive development as central to her business model, believing that the competence of the communicator is as important as the content they generate.

For women in business and communicators especially, George-Taylor’s story offers actionable lessons: build deep domain expertise, cultivate credibility through continuity and results, invest in leadership and mentorship, and recognise the value of building platforms — not just companies.

She shows that in sectors where visibility and reputation matter, mastering the craft, being consistent, and staying ahead of evolution (e.g., digital, AI, globalisation) matter more than mere thresholds of success.

Today, Tokunboh George-Taylor stands not only as the CEO of a major African communications consultancy but as a mentor, network builder, and strategist whose influence spans boards, brands and borders.

Her presence validates the idea that for communicators, leadership matters as much as creativity—and that in Africa’s fast-shifting business ecosystem, voices that are clear, credible and calibrated will always rise.
