Rachel Migwi Becomes First Woman to Lead Godrej East Africa as Business Head

In a landmark appointment described as a “glass-ceiling smashing move,” Godrej has named Rachel Migwi as its East Africa Business Head/Managing Director.

This makes her the first black person and the first woman to hold the role. Additionally, she now stands as the only female business head across Godrej’s Africa, USA, and Middle East region, marking a historic achievement for her and the company.

Migwi’s appointment follows a distinguished career in the Fast-Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG) sector, where she has demonstrated exceptional leadership and expertise.

Before this role, she served as the Category Lead for Haircare at Godrej, overseeing operations across Africa, the USA, and the Middle East. Her deep knowledge in sales, key account management, trade marketing, and brand management has solidified her reputation as a leader capable of driving growth and innovation.

With nearly two decades in the industry, Migwi has held multiple leadership positions within Godrej Kenya, including Personal Care & Hygiene Category Marketing Manager, Head of Sales, and Marketing Manager for FMCG. Her ability to navigate complex markets and build high-performing teams has been a key strength throughout her career.

Before joining Godrej, she spent nearly 12 years at Reckitt Benckiser, where she played a crucial role in the success of brands like Dettol and Veet.

Among her achievements, she led strategic brand initiatives that propelled Dettol soap to become Kenya’s top toilet soap in 2009. She also pioneered a public-private partnership between Dettol and Kenya’s Ministry of Public Health and Sanitation, significantly impacting public hygiene awareness. Her tenure at Reckitt Benckiser earned her multiple accolades, including the Best New Product Launch Award for Dettol Hand Sanitizer from the Marketing Society of Kenya and the Best Sales Manager Award from Reckitt Benckiser EA Ltd.

As Business Head, Migwi is expected to lead Godrej Kenya into a new era of expansion and innovation. Given her deep understanding of the African market, industry experts believe she is well-positioned to drive growth strategies, enhance consumer engagement, and reinforce Godrej’s presence in East Africa. Her leadership also underscores the company’s commitment to inclusivity, gender diversity, and empowerment in executive roles.

Holding an MBA in Strategic Management and a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration (Hotel Management) from the United States International University – Africa, Migwi has consistently demonstrated strategic acumen and business expertise.

Her rise from a sales executive to the highest-ranking official at Godrej East Africa is an inspiration to aspiring leaders, particularly women and young professionals looking to make an impact in the corporate world.
