Rwandan President Kagame Sacks Prime Minister in Major Cabinet Reshuffle, Appoints Replacement

Rwandan President Paul Kagame has dismissed Prime Minister Edouard Ngirente in a sweeping leadership reshuffle, appointing former banker Justin Nsengiyumva as his replacement.

The move signals a strategic recalibration at the top level of government.

Ngirente, who had served since 2017, was relieved of his duties on Wednesday, marking the end of a nearly seven-year tenure characterised by policies focused on economic growth, infrastructure development, and regional diplomacy.

His successor, Nsengiyumva, brings a background in finance and public administration, aligning with Kagame’s preference for technocratic governance.

In his acceptance remarks, the newly appointed prime minister pledged full commitment to advancing Rwanda’s national goals under Kagame’s vision.

“I am honored by this trust and ready to serve with integrity and purpose,” Nsengiyumva said.

Under Rwanda’s Constitution, a new Cabinet must be formed within 15 days of the prime minister’s appointment, suggesting more leadership changes may soon follow.

While the government has not provided a reason for Ngirente’s removal, analysts see the reshuffle as part of Kagame’s broader effort to streamline leadership in line with Rwanda’s development ambitions.

The president met briefly with Nsengiyumva for consultations on national priorities, further highlighting the administration’s focus on performance-driven leadership.

This reshuffle reinforces Kagame’s strong control over Rwanda’s political structure and his ongoing push to maintain the country’s economic momentum amid shifting regional dynamics.
