As the world commemorates International Women’s Day, Nigerian women are being encouraged to explore investment opportunities in the capital market as a means of wealth creation.
The Minister of State for Finance, Dr. Doris Uzoka-Anite, made this appeal during the official launch of the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) Podcast in Abuja on Monday.
She emphasized the importance of podcasts as a tool for educating the public and inspiring more women to actively engage in the financial sector.
Highlighting the unique challenges women face, Uzoka-Anite noted that, beyond their professional roles, they also balance family and societal responsibilities.
She called for government policies, reforms, and frameworks that promote female participation in the financial sector, pointing out that some restrictive policies against the girl child still exist.
“Women are naturally skilled at managing finances. We know how to allocate money within the home to benefit the entire family. If a woman understands how to multiply and save money effectively to ensure long-term value, she will embrace such knowledge. They just need the right information to make informed financial decisions,” she stated.
She urged women to actively seek investment opportunities in the capital market, emphasizing that the sector is open for business and that women should become key players. She also stressed the need for a multi-faceted approach—both individual and institutional—to support women’s advancement in the financial industry.
“It’s about creating awareness and ensuring institutions treat women based on their competencies and capabilities. We must be intentional about supporting women in achieving their full potential. Women have proven to be trustworthy and dependable, which is why more of them are occupying positions traditionally held by men. We call on all stakeholders to consciously support women in reaching their highest capacity,” she added.
Uzoka-Anite commended the SEC for launching the podcast, describing it as an innovative and timely initiative. She expressed optimism that the platform would fulfill its objectives.
Speaking on the importance of the capital market, she underscored its critical role in driving economic growth, boosting industries, creating jobs, and unlocking Nigeria’s economic potential.
She emphasized the need for financial literacy as a fundamental step in building investor confidence and urged Nigerians to take advantage of available investment opportunities. “The capital market has the potential to propel Nigeria toward a $1 trillion economy. To achieve this, we must ensure financial literacy, increase participation, and implement reforms that make the market more transparent, efficient, and secure,” she said.
She commended the SEC’s efforts in expanding market awareness and pledged her full support to the Commission in ensuring a vibrant and inclusive capital market.
The SEC Director General Dr. Emomotimi Agama, also highlighted the Commission’s commitment to disseminating financial information nationwide.
He emphasized that the podcast aims to reach even the most remote areas of Nigeria, providing people—especially women—with the knowledge they need to engage in the capital market and create wealth.
