South Africa’s electric vehicle market is gearing up for a competitive boost, with European automakers Volvo and BMW set to roll out new luxury EVs in 2026.
The move reflects growing demand for premium electric mobility in the region, where global brands are competing to win over affluent buyers.
Volvo plans to debut two major models next year. The ES90 sedan, arriving between mid and late Q1 2026, will be the brand’s first vehicle equipped with 800-volt charging technology, enabling faster charging and extended driving range.
Combining classic sedan styling with fastback design and spacious interiors, the ES90 will also receive continuous over-the-air updates.
Later in the year—between mid and late Q3—Volvo will introduce the EX60, an electric SUV positioned between the XC40 Recharge and the flagship EX90.
The new model aims to make premium EV ownership more accessible in South Africa, supported by a naming refresh that will see the C40 renamed EC40 and the XC40 Recharge updated to EX40.

BMW is also expanding its footprint with the launch of the iX3 electric SUV in Q3 2026. As the first model from BMW’s Neue Klasse lineup, the iX3 will feature sixth-generation eDrive technology, offering up to 805 km of driving range and a high-performance 400 kW charging rate.
The initial xDrive 50 variant will deliver 345 kW with all-wheel drive capability, accelerating from 0–100 km/h in 4.9 seconds.
Production is already underway in Debrecen, Hungary, ahead of its expected arrival in the South African market.
Industry experts say the simultaneous entry of the two European giants signals increased confidence in South Africa’s EV ecosystem, driven by improvements in charging infrastructure and rising consumer interest.
Volvo’s EX30 remains the best-selling EV in the country, while Chinese brands like BYD and GWM continue to strengthen their presence.
Analysts believe that the upcoming premium offerings from Volvo and BMW will further diversify the market, offering high-end, technology-rich alternatives for South African drivers.
