Tinubu Appoints Omotenioye Majekodunmi as New DG of Climate Change Council

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has appointed Omotenioye Majekodunmi as the new Director-General of the National Council on Climate Change (NCCC).

She takes over from Dr. Nkiruka Madueke, the Council’s pioneering DG who assumed office in June 2024 and is credited with laying the institutional foundation for the agency.

Majekodunmi, a respected environmental lawyer and expert in climate finance, brings over 17 years of experience to her new role.

Prior to this appointment, she served as the council’s financial adviser, where she was instrumental in developing funding frameworks for climate initiatives.

The appointment was announced recently in a statement by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.

According to the statement, the move reflects President Tinubu’s broader agenda to position climate action as a cornerstone of national development.

“Majekodunmi’s appointment reaffirms the Tinubu administration’s commitment to tackling climate change as both an environmental necessity and a driver of sustainable economic growth, national security, and social inclusion,” the statement read.

President Tinubu also expressed gratitude to Dr. Madueke for her dedication and the foundational work she carried out during her tenure.

Established under the Climate Change Act of 2021, the National Council on Climate Change is Nigeria’s lead agency for coordinating climate policy, implementing the national carbon budget, and mobilizing green finance to support sustainable development.
