President Mahama Appoints Zita Benson as Ghana’s First Female High Commissioner to the UK and Ireland

Sabah Zita Benson has made history as Ghana’s first female High Commissioner to the United Kingdom and Ireland.

Her groundbreaking appointment, made in May 2025 by President John Dramani Mahama, marks a significant milestone in both her career and Ghana’s diplomatic history.

Benson brings a distinguished track record in public service and diplomacy. She previously served as Ghana’s Ambassador to the Czech Republic (2014–2016), with concurrent accreditation to Slovakia, Hungary, Macedonia, and Romania—efforts that significantly enhanced bilateral relations.

At just 33 years old, she made history in 2009 as Ghana’s youngest female Minister of State, serving under President John Evans Atta Mills as Minister of Information and later, Minister of Tourism. She also played a strategic role during President Barack Obama’s 2009 visit to Ghana.

Zita Benson is an alumna of Archbishop Porter Girls’ Secondary School. She earned her BA in English and Law from Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology in 1999, followed by an LLB from the University of Ghana in 2004. She was called to the Ghana Bar in 2006 and later obtained an LL.M in Oil and Gas in 2014.

Politically, she contested the Dome Kwabenya parliamentary seat in both 2008 and 2012 under the National Democratic Congress (NDC), achieving the party’s highest vote count in the constituency, though ultimately not winning the seat.

As High Commissioner, Benson is expected to strengthen Ghana’s diplomatic and economic ties with the UK and Ireland while promoting national interests in areas such as trade, education, and cultural exchange. Her legal expertise, political acumen, and public service experience make her well-suited for this pivotal role.

Also, Annie Ampofo of Metro TV has been appointed Head of Public Affairs at the Ghana High Commission in the UK and Ireland. Her appointment was announced by NPP’s Akosua Manu via X (formerly Twitter), highlighting her new role in managing the commission’s public image and communications strategy.
