Popular chorale singer, Chioma Belonwu, professionally known as Cheeomah, has reinforced the relevance of sacred music after emerging winner of the Music and Chorale Competition held in Lagos.
Cheeomah clinched the top prize in the individual category of the contest, organised by Dominican Media, and went home with the N1 million grand reward.
Her victory came after a highly competitive process that featured hundreds of participants nationwide in the “Christmas Joy” edition of the event. The competition began with an online voting stage that shortlisted 15 contestants, before narrowing them down to five finalists.
Cheeomah advanced through strong public support and ultimately secured her win with a powerful live performance at the grand finale. Contestants were judged on vocal strength, stage presence and audience engagement.

Reacting to the achievement, the singer described the win as a major milestone for chorale music and young artistes pursuing unconventional creative paths.
“This victory is a breakthrough for chorale music and for young singers who choose less popular artistic directions. It proves that music with depth still matters. I have always remained faithful to what God placed in my heart, even when it did not seem popular,” she said.
Also speaking, the convener of the competition, Rev. Fr. Jude Owoh, said the initiative was created to promote music that uplifts and positively influences society.
“We want young people to understand the responsibility that comes with using their voices. Cheeomah’s performance showed that music can be impactful without being noisy,” he said.
