Polygamy And Promiscuity Are Not The Same — Former Benue Police Spokesperson Clarifies

Former spokesperson of the Benue State Police Command, Sewuese Anene, has stirred conversations online after stating that polygamy should not be mistaken for promiscuity.

The former police public relations officer made the remark while reacting to ongoing public debates surrounding marriage, fidelity and African family structures. According to her, many people wrongly place consensual polygamous marriages in the same category as irresponsible sexual behaviour.

Anene argued that polygamy, particularly within African cultural and religious settings, is a structured marital arrangement that differs significantly from promiscuity, which she described as uncontrolled or indiscriminate sexual relationships.

Her position has since generated mixed reactions across social media platforms, with some Nigerians defending traditional and religious practices that permit multiple wives, while others insisted that monogamy remains the ideal family structure in modern society.

The discussion has also reignited broader conversations about culture, morality and changing social values in Nigeria. While some commentators maintained that polygamy is deeply rooted in parts of African tradition and should not automatically be condemned, critics argued that the practice often creates emotional and economic complications within families.

In Nigeria, polygamy remains legally and culturally recognised under customary and Islamic law in several parts of the country, despite the growing influence of Western-style monogamous unions.

Anene’s statement has continued to trend online as Nigerians debate the thin line between cultural practice, personal choice and societal expectations around marriage and relationships.
