AfDB Pledges Stronger Support for Women, SMEs Across Africa

The African Development Bank (AfDB) has reaffirmed its commitment to accelerating economic opportunities for women, youth, and small businesses across Africa, positioning inclusive growth as a key pillar of the continent’s development agenda. According to Realnews The pledge was made by the President of the African Development Bank, Sidi Ould Tah, at the conclusion of the bank’s 2026 Annual Meetings held in Brazzaville, Republic of Congo.

Tah emphasized that Africa’s transformation cannot be driven solely by governments and institutions but must involve grassroots communities, civil society organizations, philanthropists, and members of the African diaspora. He noted that the bank would intensify collaboration with stakeholders to address critical priorities, including women’s empowerment, youth employment, support for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), and access to essential services.

The AfDB chief reiterated the institution’s ambition to become a more innovative and solution-driven development partner capable of supporting Africa’s structural transformation and economic integration. He described the bank as an instrument for delivering practical solutions that can unlock growth, create jobs, and improve livelihoods across the continent.

The commitment comes amid growing efforts by the bank to close the financing gap facing women entrepreneurs. Earlier this month, the AfDB approved a $61 million financing package aimed at expanding access to affordable credit for women-owned and women-led businesses in Nigeria. More than 95 percent of the funding is targeted at women-led micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs), particularly in agriculture, healthcare, and clean energy sectors.

The intervention aligns with the bank’s broader Affirmative Finance Action for Women in Africa programme, which seeks to address the estimated $42 billion financing gap confronting women entrepreneurs across Africa.
