Cameroon to Revive Oil Refinery After Six-Year Shutdown

Cameroon’s national oil refinery, Société Nationale de Raffinage (Sonara), is set to undergo major rehabilitation after remaining idle for six years following a devastating fire in 2019.

According to CameroonOnline, the government has approved a recovery program known as Parras 24, which outlines a two-year plan to repair and restructure the 42,000-barrel-per-day facility.

The initiative, officially endorsed by Sonara’s board on August 13, is expected to restore operations by 2027.

Officials say the project is crucial to overcoming years of financial difficulties, including heavy debts and operational setbacks aggravated by the fire.

“Strong government support will be critical to ensuring the refinery’s revival,” company leaders emphasized.

The refinery’s rehabilitation is expected to significantly reduce Cameroon’s reliance on imported fuel, stabilize domestic energy prices, and enhance the country’s role in Central Africa’s oil market.
