China Pledges $1 Million to Support Flood Victims

The Federal Government of Nigeria received a boost in its flood relief initiatives on Wednesday as China pledged $1 million to aid victims in the country’s northern states.

The financial assistance was formalized in Abuja when the Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, Abubakar Bagudu, signed the exchange notes with the Chinese Ambassador to Nigeria, Yu Dunhai.

Minister Bagudu in a statement, described the donation as timely and emphasized its role in complementing the government’s ongoing efforts to deliver relief materials and rebuild livelihoods in the most affected communities.

“We firmly believe that today’s signing ceremony will open new avenues for collaboration, strengthening our strategic partnership for the mutual benefit of our peoples,” he said.

Bagudu also assured that the grant would be managed transparently through a joint monitoring and evaluation framework agreed upon with the Chinese Embassy.

Ambassador Dunhai reiterated China’s solidarity with Nigeria, recalling the recent devastating floods that affected both countries.

“We express our deepest condolences to those who lost their lives and convey our support,” he said, noting that the aid reflects China’s confidence in Nigeria’s recovery efforts.

“Under the strong leadership of the Federal Government and the dedication of all Nigerians, we are confident that homes and communities will be rebuilt soon”.

The ambassador further highlighted the growing economic partnership between Nigeria and China, citing President Xi Jinping’s recent announcement of zero-tariff treatment on 400 percent of tariff lines for African countries, including Nigeria.

This initiative, he explained, is expected to boost Nigerian exports, create jobs, and support economic development.

The $1 million aid will be directed to the states hardest hit by flooding: Kebbi, Jigawa, Sokoto, Borno, Taraba, and Adamawa.
