When Aisha Ayensu launched Christie Brown in 2008, she wasn’t just starting a fashion brand. She was honoring her grandmother, a gifted dressmaker whose talent never carried a label of its own.
Only 21 years old and still completing a psychology degree, Ayensu transformed that tribute into one of Africa’s most respected luxury fashion houses. From its home in Accra, Christie Brown has become known for blending traditional West African textiles like kente, wax prints, and batakari with contemporary designs that celebrate the modern African woman.
Her bold vision quickly earned international recognition. In 2009, she was named Emerging Designer of the Year at Arise Africa Fashion Week, and a year later Christie Brown became the only Ghanaian brand showcased at Arise’s Prêt-à-Porter Paris Fashion Week.
She has since designed costumes for Beyoncé’s Mrs. Carter World Tour, dressed leading African celebrities, been recognised by Forbes as one of Africa’s 30 Most Promising Entrepreneurs, and earned a place on Vogue Business’ 100 Innovators in Sustainability list.
What makes Aisha Ayensu’s journey remarkable isn’t just the accolades. It’s her commitment to proving that African luxury can compete on the global stage without losing its cultural identity.
Nearly two decades on, Christie Brown remains proudly Made in Ghana, telling Africa’s story through fashion, one collection at a time.
