From Urban Planner to Spice Mogul: How Aisha Ibironke Mustapha is Transforming Nigeria’s Culinary Industry

At the heart of Lagos, where tradition meets innovation, Aisha Ibironke Mustapha is redefining the spice industry.

As the founder and Spice Lead Formulator of Bimwunmi Enterprise, Mustapha has turned a modest ₦20,750 seed capital into a thriving agro-food processing company, offering health-conscious Nigerians a flavourful alternative to conventional seasonings.

Mustapha’s journey began not in a kitchen but in the realm of urban and regional planning, graduating in 2014.

However, the scarcity of white collar jobs post-NYSC led her to explore entrepreneurship.

A pivotal moment came during a seminar organised by a Facebook group, where discussions on health, herbs, and spices ignited her passion.

Coupled with a family history of diabetes and hypertension and inspired by her grandmother’s traditional cooking methods devoid of artificial seasonings, Mustapha envisioned a venture that combined health and heritage.

Established in 2016, Bimwunmi Enterprise has grown into a one-stop shop for organic herbs and spices, boasting six variants of NAFDAC-certified spice blends.

The company’s mission aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), focusing on providing quality, affordable, and healthy products to promote better lifestyles.

To date, over 1,000 households have embraced Bimwunmi’s offerings, a testament to Mustapha’s commitment to health-conscious living.

The path to success, however, was not without obstacles.

Mustapha faced challenges in sourcing raw materials and navigating the complexities of the food processing industry.

Her strategy involved collaborating with peers in the same line of business and joining relevant associations to gain vital information and resources.

Her proactive approach led her to participate in various training programs, including the Wema Bank Business School, Women in Export, London Professional Training Course, Google Hustle Academy, and the GIZ/GOPA Scale-Up Program. These experiences equipped her with the skills and networks necessary to scale her business effectively.

Mustapha’s innovative approach and dedication have not gone unnoticed. She has been featured in The Nation Newspaper and appeared as a chef on TVC’s “Wake Up Nigeria.”

Her contributions to the industry were further acknowledged when she received recognition at the Business Women Hub Conference 2024, celebrating her as one of the thriving female entrepreneurs making significant strides in business.

Beyond her business acumen, Mustapha is passionate about empowering others. She advises aspiring entrepreneurs to “be focused, be yourself, be intentional, be courageous, don’t limit yourselves, associate with people of productive mindsets, improve your growth mindset, and be happy.”

Her story serves as an inspiration, demonstrating that with determination, strategic planning, and a commitment to quality, it’s possible to transform a simple idea into a successful enterprise.

As Bimwunmi Enterprise continues to grow, Mustapha remains focused on her goal: to have her products spread around the world, promoting healthy living and showcasing the rich culinary heritage of Nigeria.
