Ghana Moves Closer to Energy Independence with Cape Three Points Oil and Gas Discovery

Ghana has reached a major milestone in its energy journey with the official Declaration of Commerciality (DoC) for the Eban-Akoma oil and gas discoveries in the Cape Three Points Block 4 (CTP-B4).

The announcement was made by the Ministry of Energy and Green Transition, signaling strong progress toward energy independence.

The declaration was submitted by a joint venture made up of Eni Ghana Exploration & Production Ltd, Vitol Upstream Tano Ltd, Woodfields Upstream Ghana Ltd, GNPC Exploration & Production Company Ltd (Explorco), and the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC).

The Energy Minister John Abdulai Jinapor described the development as a “major boost” for Ghana’s upstream petroleum sector, emphasising its potential to fuel economic transformation, enhance energy security, and support the country’s industrialisation agenda.

Following the declaration, the joint venture is expected to develop a comprehensive Plan of Development (PoD), which will focus on maximising resource recovery and value to the nation, with a strong emphasis on local participation in line with Ghana’s energy policies.

The Petroleum Commission and GNPC will provide oversight to ensure that the project aligns with national economic priorities.

The ministry underscored that the move reflects its commitment to fostering a transparent, investor-friendly, and resilient energy sector.

This latest discovery brings Ghana a step closer to realising its long-term goal of energy self-sufficiency while strengthening its position in the regional oil and gas market.
