Iman: The Somali Fashion Icon Who Redefined Global Beauty

Long before diversity became a fashion industry talking point, Iman was already changing the face of global modelling.

Born Zara Mohamed Abdulmajid in Mogadishu, Somalia, on July 25, 1955, the woman the world would come to know simply as Iman emerged as one of the most influential figures in fashion history. Discovered in 1975, she quickly rose from a promising newcomer to an international sensation, captivating audiences and designers with her striking beauty, elegance, and commanding presence.

At a time when opportunities for African models were limited, Iman broke barriers and challenged long-standing beauty standards. Her success opened doors for generations of Black models, proving that beauty was not confined to a single look, culture, or continent.

Throughout her remarkable career, Iman became the muse of some of fashion’s most celebrated designers, including Gianni Versace, Thierry Mugler, Calvin Klein, Donna Karan, and Yves Saint Laurent. Her ability to bring life, sophistication, and confidence to every collection made her one of the most sought-after models of her era. On runways, magazine covers, and advertising campaigns, she embodied a new vision of glamour that resonated across the world.

Yet Iman’s influence extends far beyond modelling. Recognizing the lack of beauty products designed for women of colour, she launched Iman Cosmetics in 1994. The brand became a pioneering force in inclusive beauty, offering products tailored to diverse skin tones years before the wider industry embraced the concept. Her entrepreneurial success demonstrated that representation in business can be just as powerful as representation in fashion.

Beyond her professional achievements, Iman has earned admiration for her humanitarian work and advocacy. She has consistently used her platform to support charitable causes, refugee initiatives, and efforts focused on empowering women and underserved communities.

Her personal life also captured global attention through her marriage to legendary musician David Bowie. Together, they became one of the world’s most admired couples, celebrated not only for their fame but also for their enduring partnership and mutual respect.

Today, Iman remains a timeless symbol of grace, resilience, and innovation. More than a supermodel, she is a cultural trailblazer whose influence continues to shape fashion, beauty, and entrepreneurship. Her legacy serves as a reminder that true style is not merely about appearance—it is about the courage to redefine what the world considers possible. :::
