Lagos, China Partners on Low-Carbon Initiative to Combat Emissions

The Lagos State Government has announced a new collaboration with China under the China-Nigeria Low-Carbon Demonstration Initiative (Nextier) to advance the Lekki Low-Carbon Demonstration Zone Project, aimed at cutting carbon emissions and promoting clean energy adoption in the state.

According to a joint statement issued on Thursday, the initiative is designed to align with Lagos’ broader climate goals.

The announcement was made during a strategic meeting held at the Ministry of Environment and Water Resources in Alausa, Ikeja, with Lagos Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, in attendance.

Wahab emphasized the project’s alignment with Lagos State’s climate resilience frameworks, including the Lagos Climate Adaptation and Resilience Action Plan, unveiled during the 2023 Lagos International Climate Change Summit.

He highlighted the initiative’s potential to reduce air pollution, limit airborne diseases, and ultimately boost public health outcomes.

He further noted the project’s socio-economic impact, including job creation, increased access to clean energy, and improved competitiveness of Nigerian industries on the global stage.

The Director at the National Council on Climate Change, Michael Ivenso, added that the visit from Chinese officials was a key step toward finalizing bilateral cooperation and mobilizing private sector investment in the initiative.

He affirmed Lagos’ position as a viable environment for climate-related business ventures.

Wahab assured that the state government would provide necessary support, including data, personnel, and funding, to ensure the successful implementation of the project.

This collaboration underscores Nigeria’s growing commitment to sustainable development and positions Lagos as a pioneer in Africa’s transition to a low-carbon economy.
