Nigeria Endorses China’s Global Governance Initiative

Nigeria has formally expressed support for China’s Global Governance Initiative (GGI), describing it as a strategic framework to strengthen the international system and promote inclusive cooperation.

According to a statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the initiative, unveiled on September 1 at the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation Plus meeting in Tianjin, China, builds on earlier Chinese proposals such as the Global Development Initiative (GDI), the Global Security Initiative (GSI), and the Global Civilisation Initiative (GCI).

It seeks to address pressing global challenges, including climate change, digital inequality, governance of emerging technologies, and reforms in international law and representation.

In a statement released in Abuja, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Kimiebi Ebienfa said Nigeria welcomes the GGI’s emphasis on sovereign equality, rule of law, multilateralism, people-centred governance, and results-driven action.

The ministry further noted that as one of Africa’s largest economies, Nigeria sees the platform as a valuable avenue for advancing shared priorities, particularly reforms at the United Nations and inclusive governance in new domains such as artificial intelligence, cyberspace, and outer space.

According to BusinessDay, the Federal Government also highlighted how the GGI aligns with Nigeria’s development objectives and the African Union’s Agenda 2063.

It pledged to work with partners across the Global South to strengthen regional cooperation and build consensus for a fairer global order.

Reaffirming its commitment, Nigeria underscored the need for a more just and effective international system—one that reflects the aspirations of all peoples while upholding shared responsibility and mutual respect.
