Nigerian Govt Launches Nationwide Drive to Recover Unremitted Funds

The Federal Government has kicked off a nationwide revenue recovery initiative aimed at boosting inflows into the Federation Account and sealing financial leakages across key revenue-generating agencies.

This move followed a strategic meeting yesterday, at the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC) headquarters in Abuja, where its Chairman, Dr. Mohammed Shehu, OFR, hosted the Chairman of the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), Zacch Adedeji, to formally inaugurate consultants engaged for the recovery project.

According to a statement signed by Maryam Yusuf, Head of Information and Public Relations at RMAFC, the exercise seeks to enhance fiscal transparency, strengthen accountability, and ensure all statutory revenues owed to the Federation are fully remitted.

This comes as The Punch earlier reported a probe into $42.37 billion (N12.91 trillion) allegedly unremitted to the Federation Account between 2011 and 2017.

Dr. Shehu emphasised that the new initiative was “not a routine administrative action but a deliberate, result-oriented innovation” to strengthen fiscal governance and ensure every recoverable naira is accounted for.

He added that the engagement of consultants was a strategic move to block leakages, improve transparency, and boost the fiscal capacity of all tiers of government — aligning with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

The statement further explained that the Commission’s constitutional mandate, supported by the President, his Special Adviser on Revenue, and the FIRS Chairman, underpins this nationwide drive to identify and recover unremitted revenues across multiple sectors.

Representing the FIRS Chairman at the event, Shettima Tamadi, Coordinating Director at the Service, commended Dr. Shehu’s leadership and pledged FIRS’s commitment to collaboration, stressing that “Nigeria has a huge revenue gap, but with stronger inter-agency cooperation, that gap can be closed for sustainable fiscal growth.”

The Secretary to the Commission, Joseph Okechukwu, urged the consultants to deliver the assignment within the six-month deadline, ensuring all recoverable funds are promptly returned to the Federation Account to support national development priorities.

Speaking on behalf of the consultants, Temitayo Ojeleke, the lead consultant, described the engagement as a “national call to duty,” assuring RMAFC and FIRS of the team’s commitment to professionalism, transparency, and measurable results.

He stated, “We accept this assignment as partners in Nigeria’s economic renewal and are ready to deliver outcomes that will strengthen the nation’s revenue base.”

The inauguration marks a major milestone in RMAFC’s ongoing efforts to deepen inter-agency collaboration, enhance fiscal accountability, and maximise national revenue generation for the collective good of the Federation.
