Oby Ezekwesili Appointed Advisor to Club de Madrid

Former Nigerian Minister of Education, Dr. Obiageli Ezekwesili, has been appointed as an advisor to the Club de Madrid, the world’s largest alliance of democratic former presidents and prime ministers.

Announcing the appointment on social media platform X, the Club de Madrid wrote:
“On behalf of all of us, thank you @obyezeks for joining @ClubdeMadrid. Your leadership, vision, and commitment to democratic values are deeply appreciated. We are honoured to count on your voice as we work to advance inclusive democracy worldwide.”

Dr. Ezekwesili confirmed the appointment via her official X account, stating:
“I accepted the invitation to become an advisor to @ClubdeMadrid – the world’s largest forum of democratic former Presidents and Prime Ministers, who leverage their individual and collective leadership experience and global reach to strengthen inclusive democratic practice and improve the well-being of people around the world.”

A respected public policy expert and democracy advocate, she praised the organisation’s continued dedication to addressing global challenges.

“As our global context becomes even more complex, the leadership vacuum delays solutions to ‘global public Bads.’ I therefore deeply appreciate how these former leaders of democracies around the world continue to dedicate themselves to helping solve our global challenges and amplify opportunities for cooperation. Delighted to support,” she added.

Founded in 2001 and based in Madrid, Spain, the Club de Madrid is composed of more than 100 former heads of state and government from over 70 countries. Its members serve in an advisory capacity, offering their expertise to current leaders, civil society, and institutions around the world — all on a pro bono basis.

The organisation focuses on strengthening democratic governance, resolving political conflict, and promoting peace and development. Through initiatives like the Annual Policy Dialogues and Policy Labs, the Club provides platforms for high-level discourse on global issues.

In April 2025, the organisation’s Policy Dialogue addressed reforms in global financial governance to better reflect shared democratic principles. One of its hallmark initiatives, the President’s Circle, facilitates open exchange among global leaders while guiding the organisation’s strategic direction.
