Odiri Oginni: Building Financial Inclusion Through Innovation and Leadership in Africa’s Insurance Industry

In Africa’s fast-evolving financial services landscape, Odiri Oginni has distinguished herself as one of the continent’s most innovative and forward-thinking executives.

As the Chief Executive Officer of United Capital Insurance Limited, she is part of a new generation of women transforming how insurance and finance work for everyday Africans.

Her career is defined by excellence, strategic leadership, and a passion for building inclusive financial systems that empower people and businesses alike.

Born and raised in Nigeria, Odiri’s path into finance was shaped by a fascination with numbers, structure, and the power of money to influence lives. She earned her Bachelor’s degree in Accounting from the University of Benin and later became a Chartered Accountant (FCA), building a solid foundation in corporate finance and risk management.

Over the years, she complemented her expertise with executive education from institutions including the Lagos Business School and INSEAD, enhancing her global perspective and leadership acumen.

Odiri’s professional journey spans more than two decades, during which she has held leadership positions across the insurance, banking, and investment sectors.

Before assuming her current role, she served as Chief Executive Officer at United Capital Asset Management Limited, where she spearheaded the company’s transformation into one of Nigeria’s most dynamic investment management firms.

Under her leadership, the firm achieved exponential growth, expanding its product offerings and deepening investor confidence through transparency, innovation, and disciplined governance.

In 2023, she was appointed CEO of United Capital Insurance Limited, where she now leads efforts to redefine insurance accessibility in Nigeria.

Her vision for the company is rooted in financial inclusion, with a focus on creating digital-driven insurance products tailored to the needs of individuals and small businesses.

For Odiri, insurance is not just a corporate service — it is a social tool for resilience, protection, and wealth creation.

Her approach to leadership is deeply human-centered. She believes that great leaders are those who empower others to excel.

This philosophy has earned her the respect of peers and subordinates alike, as she continues to mentor women in finance and advocate for gender equity in corporate leadership.

Through mentorship and participation in industry panels, Odiri actively supports young professionals seeking to build meaningful careers in finance and investment.

Beyond her executive duties, Odiri Oginni serves as a thought leader in conversations around Africa’s financial innovation, insurance penetration, and economic sustainability.

She is known for her forward-thinking approach to integrating technology into traditional finance, ensuring that African financial institutions remain competitive in the digital era.

Her career achievements have earned her recognition among Nigeria’s leading women in finance, with features in BusinessDay’s Top 100 Women in Leadership, Forbes Africa, and The Guardian Nigeria.

Yet, Odiri remains grounded in her purpose — to build systems that enable ordinary Africans to access financial protection and long-term security.

Through her leadership at United Capital Insurance, Odiri Oginni is charting a new course for Africa’s insurance industry — one defined by accessibility, innovation, and trust.

Her journey reflects not only professional excellence but also a deep sense of duty to transform finance into a tool for empowerment.
