Osato El Osemwingie: Redefining Nigeria’s Protein Snack Industry with Purpose and Innovation

Osato El Osemwingie is making a mark in Nigeria’s vibrant food industry by reimagining traditional protein snacks into clean, convenient, and globally attractive products.

As the founder and CEO of El-Gazelle Foods, she is on a mission to revolutionize the kilishi market, ensuring quality and safety while empowering communities.

Osato’s journey into the food processing industry was catalyzed by a personal tragedy.

A close acquaintance suffered severe health complications after consuming contaminated roadside kilishi, a popular Nigerian dried meat snack.

This incident highlighted the urgent need for hygienic, standardized kilishi production, inspiring Osato to establish El-Gazelle Foods.

El-Gazelle Foods specializes in producing various types of kilishi, including chicken, goat, and beef, adhering to stringent hygiene and quality standards.

The company’s products are NAFDAC-approved and distributed across over 100 retail outlets in Nigeria and five international markets.

By integrating solar-powered and mechanized production methods, El-Gazelle ensures sustainability and efficiency in its operations.

Beyond business, Osato is deeply committed to social empowerment. El-Gazelle Foods directly employs 10 youths and indirectly supports over 50 individuals, including women and smallholder farmers.

The company collaborates with more than 1,000 farmers, supporting women’s participation, to reduce hunger, food waste, and environmental degradation.

Osato’s innovative approach and social impact have garnered significant recognition.

She is a fellow of WomHub in partnership with the Royal Academy of Engineering in London and a member of IAAS worldwide. Her accolades include awards from the Ooni of Ife, the First Lady of Ogun State, and recognition as one of Nigeria’s top 20 MSME founders.

Osato is a vocal advocate for women’s empowerment in business. She emphasizes that equal opportunities are insufficient without addressing systemic and cultural barriers that hinder women’s advancement.

Through mentorship and support, she encourages women to pursue entrepreneurship confidently, challenging societal norms and biases.

Looking ahead, Osato envisions a more supportive ecosystem for micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in Nigeria.

She advocates for simplified regulatory processes, improved access to finance, enhanced business development services, and infrastructure development to create an enabling environment for small businesses to thrive.

Osato El Osemwingie’s journey from personal tragedy to entrepreneurial success exemplifies the transformative power of purpose-driven innovation.

Through El-Gazelle Foods, she not only redefines traditional Nigerian snacks but also fosters community empowerment and advocates for systemic change, setting a precedent for socially conscious entrepreneurship in Africa.
