Princess Opeyemi Bright Becomes UK’s Youngest Mayor

Princess Opeyemi Bright has made history as the youngest mayor in the United Kingdom after officially assuming the role of First Citizen in the London Borough of Barking and Dagenham.

At just 29 years old, her appointment is a significant milestone for the Nigerian diaspora and youth representation in British politics.

The inauguration, held on Friday, May 16, garnered widespread attention as a celebration of diversity and the increasing presence of Nigerians in global public service.

“This is nothing short of God’s grace,” she said in her acceptance speech. “As a proud Nigerian, I’m honoured to serve my borough and will represent my heritage with humility and excellence. I hope this journey inspires others to lead and serve.”

Born in the UK to Nigerian parents, Bright began her political career at age 22 when she was elected councillor.

Over the past seven years, she has championed youth empowerment, social inclusion, and economic development in her community.

Her path continues a legacy of leadership: her mother, Dr. Councillor Afolasade Bright, served as Civic Mayor of Hackney from 2006 to 2007, and her father, Pastor Gbolahan Bright MBE, is a senior minister in the Redeemed Christian Church of God.

Bright joins a growing list of Nigerians making waves in international politics, alongside figures like UK Secretary of State Kemi Badenoch, Labour MP Chi Onwurah, Canadian Minister Uzoma Asagwara, and U.S. Congresswoman Esther Agbaje.
