Three Aspirants Have Purchased Labour Party Presidential Forms — Nenadi Usman

The National Chairman of the Labour Party, Nenadi Usman, has disclosed that three aspirants have so far purchased the party’s presidential nomination forms ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Usman made the revelation in Abuja during the screening exercise for aspirants seeking elective positions under the Labour Party platform, insisting that the party remains united and politically strong despite ongoing leadership disputes and internal controversies.

According to her, the growing interest from aspirants across the country reflects sustained confidence in the party’s structure and electoral relevance ahead of the next election cycle.

She further stated that the Labour Party has already resolved that its next presidential candidate should emerge from the southern region of the country, a decision she noted would naturally reduce the number of interested contenders.

Usman also hinted that the party may adopt a consensus arrangement in selecting its presidential flag bearer but assured Nigerians that every aspirant would undergo a comprehensive screening process before the primaries.

The Labour Party chairman used the occasion to dismiss concerns that the party had weakened following internal leadership tensions and the controversy surrounding alleged unauthorised nomination forms reportedly linked to former party chairman, Julius Abure.

She maintained that the current leadership recognised by the Independent National Electoral Commission remains the one produced at the party’s convention in Umuahia.

The party has also petitioned the Inspector-General of Police and the Department of State Services over the alleged circulation of unauthorised nomination forms, warning supporters and aspirants against falling victim to fraudulent actors.

    • Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi is no longer with the party ahead of the 2027 race.

    Insight

The declaration by Nenadi Usman signals the Labour Party’s attempt to project institutional stability and electoral readiness despite months of factional battles. By confirming active presidential interest and ongoing screening exercises, the party appears focused on rebuilding credibility ahead of 2027.

    Implication

The emergence of multiple presidential aspirants this early could intensify internal negotiations within the Labour Party, especially as the party pushes for a southern candidate and possible consensus arrangement. The development may also shape new political alliances and redefine the party’s post-Peter Obi identity heading into the next election cycle.
