    Yetunde Oni: Redefining Leadership in African Banking

    Few narratives in Africa’s banking industry are as compelling as that of Yetunde Oni, the trailblazing CEO of Union Bank of Nigeria. 

    Her ascent to this pivotal role not only underscores her professional prowess but also highlights the evolving role of women in Africa’s financial sector.

    Born in Nigeria, Yetunde Oni’s academic journey laid a solid foundation for her illustrious career.

    She earned a Bachelor’s degree in Economics from the University of Ibadan in 1991, demonstrating an early aptitude for financial systems and economic theories. 

    Her quest for knowledge led her to Bangor University, where she obtained an MBA in Business Administration in 2020. 

    Further honing her leadership skills, she underwent Executive Training at Oxford University in 2016.

    Oni’s professional journey began at Prime Merchant Bank’s Treasury & Money Markets Group in 1991. By 1994, she had joined Ecobank Nigeria, serving as a Relationship Manager until 2005. 

    Her strategic acumen and leadership abilities became evident during her tenure at Standard Chartered Bank Nigeria, where she started as a Senior Account Relationship Manager in 2005.

    Rising through the ranks, she became the Head of Local Corporates in 2010 and, by 2014, was appointed Managing Director & Country Head of their Commercial Banking unit in West Africa. 

    Her groundbreaking role as the first female Managing Director and CEO at Standard Chartered Bank in Sierra Leone in 2021 further cemented her status as a visionary leader. 

    In January 2024, the Central Bank of Nigeria appointed Yetunde Oni as the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Union Bank, following the dissolution of the bank’s previous board and management. This appointment marked a significant milestone, reflecting her extensive experience and the trust placed in her to steer the bank through a transformative period.

    Beyond her executive roles, Oni is deeply committed to empowering the next generation of female leaders. 

    As an associate member of Women in Management, Business, and Public Sector (WIMBIZ), she actively participates in initiatives aimed at fostering diversity and inclusion within boardrooms. 

    Her honorary memberships with the Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria and the Nigerian-British Chamber of Commerce further attest to her dedication to professional excellence and mentorship.
